From Shrimp Festival, Manatee and Marmaid at a glance at Fernandina Beach, Florida

It's not hard to be a tourist in town when our cruising schedule is on halt..waiting for the replacement of the engine..

Shrimp Festival

All of sudden this small town Fernandina Beach become busy and super crowded as the annual event: Shrimp Festival comes..

This the local boys club with their best shrimp costume on ...

This is a group from the local dance school ... all the girls dressed in their sequin outfits ... they were haveing a great time passing out their beads and necklaces to the crowd ... there was one guy in the group ... reminds me of our nephews in Toronto ... being the one guy in a whole dance school of girls is apparently not all it is cracked up to be ... so I have heard!

You thought that the painted Moose in and around Toronto were unique ... in Fernandina Beach they have painted Shrimp ... almost looks like a mermaid with a beard ... hey it does look like a mermaid with a breard!

The local "crock" eating the small fry ... the Shrimp festival theme was "Shrimping and Living in Island Time" ....

There were some big bikes in the Parade ... and some small ones too!

This is one of the few floats full of the contestants for the "Miss Shrimp Festival Scholarship Contestants" ...

The spiritual side of island life was represented as well ...

All the schools were representes ... it was the whole community there ... in floats, spectators and party goers ...

More "Shrimp" ...

... there can not be a celebration in the "south" without the Pirates ...

... in case you are wondering ... here is anotehr shrimp ... it is a shrimp festival you know ...

... the judging of the contestants ...

Mermaids

A mermaid is a mythical creature that is half woman and half fish. The name comes from 'mer' meaning sea. Although some mermaids are described as monstrous and ugly, they are more usually very beautiful. Above the waist they appear as a lovely young woman, whilst from the waist down, they are like a fish with fins and a spreading tail.

Manatee

We were in Charisma (Steven and Denise) when we saw something big sticking out of the water on the port side

Yes..that is a living creature called, Manatee (Sea Cow)

Florida manatees are found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, bays, estuaries and coastal water ecosystems of the southeastern United States. They can live in fresh, brackish, or salt water. Manatees prefer waters that are about one to two meters (3-7 feet) deep. Along the coast, manatees tend to travel in water that is about three to five meters (10-16 feet) deep, and they are rarely seen in areas over six meters (20 feet) deep. This habitat provides them with sheltered living and breeding areas, a steady, easily obtainable food supply and warm water -- all of which they need to survive.

This one was wallowing in the low tride mud .. we think ... not really sure what he/she was doing.

They love to get sprayed with fresh water, though not encouraged ...
